Here you will see the effects of a Double Merle Gene, Below are 2 pictures of my dog (a Catahoula) named Slou, She suffers from Corectopia,Microphthalmia and Nystagmus . She's clinically blind. She can not see in low light therefore she has to have well lite passages to go outside after dark. From 4 month to 8 months of age, she had Grand Mal seizures - but out grew them. She walks with her head down as to not run into things. She displays all the typical signs and actions of a blind dog, excessive barking is the biggest problem with a blind dog. It's understandable, they can't see, but it doesn't make it any less bothersome. And there is totally nothing wrong with her hearing. She can hear things I can not - a car pulling into the driveway, a door opening, her hearing is as sharp as the sight of a hawk. I'm not saying she won't be deaf in her senior years. I love my Catahoula (someone had too) but had I known then what I know now - Thank goodness I didn't pay money for this dog, and Lord knows I have invested the cost of a small car just in her eye Doctor (does not include normal vet visits). I will love her to the end and see that she remains as healthy as she can be. That's part of the relationship with a dog, like marriage -
for richer or poor, til death do we part.
